What if my landlord won't fix issues in my rental?: Make a list and send it to your landlord by certified mail. If, after 30 days, the repairs aren't corrected then contact the Code Enforcement Officer, who will make a routine inspection. If the routine inspection finds violations, the Code Enforcement Officer will send the landlord a letter outlining the items to be corrected with a time frame. If the landlord fails to correct the items within the time frame, the landlord will be issued a citation for a minimum fine of $200, with the possibility of the case going to District Court.

1. My neighbor's home is a mess, the property has a terrible odor and is in bad shape all around. What can I do about it?: Please report using the online system. The Code Enforcement Officer will visit the property and conduct an exterior inspection, with primary focus on code, safety and sanitation issues. If any violations exist at the property, the Code Enforcement Officer will send a letter describing the violations to the property owner. If the property owner fails to correct the violations within the prescribed time frame, a citation will be issued and the city may undertake additional action, potentially including court action and condemnation.

2. Why can't I have an untagged vehicle on my property if I own the property?: Westminster has adopted codes to insure properties don’t become junk yards, which supports clean and safe neighborhoods. These efforts help provide community stability and consistent property values. Section 119-77 of the City Code addresses the issue of untagged vehicles.

3. How long can someone leave their trash cans set out?: A property owner or tenant can place trash cans out no earlier than 24 hours before and 24 hours after the scheduled pick up day.

4. What happens if I fail to correct a code violation?: You will be issued a citation for a minimum fine of $200. If the fine is not paid within the prescribed time frame, city will proceed to court.

7. How tall does the grass have to be before the city will take action?: The grass must be 6 inches tall or higher.

8. How can I report illegal dumping into a storm drain?: If you are concerned about the release of pollutants or possible illegal dumping (chemicals, motor oil, paint, sewage, etc.) into a storm drain system, please contact the non-emergency Carroll County Stormwater Pollution Phone Line (410) 386-2210.
